The present work has been prepared primarily for educational purposes, taking into account the requirements of the first course in forest engineering in Romania, taught in Hungarian. Accordingly, it is extensive, since it covers the taxonomy, morphological, anatomical and developmental characteristics of woody plants, as well as their distribution, ecological needs and associations. In forest engineering, dendrology is a two-semester course. Accordingly, in the present version only the basic concepts and the species taught in the first semester are presented.
The discussion of tree and shrub species, with reference to order, family and genus, in taxonomic order, is a strict summary of the curricular requirements of the subject Dendrology I.
The distribution maps are all self-edited from the distribution database of the most important European woody shrub species, and the images used to illustrate the species are the author’s own photographs.
The primary aim of this work is to supply forestry students with additional information that they might not have enough time to learn during lectures, and secondly, to provide them a solid basis for the subject “Dendrology”, which they can build on in their future professional activities.
